EL PUNTO DE PARTIDA

Create clear assessment criteria and a learning rubric before students attempt the task. Align evidence, review decisions and feedback with the intended skill.

01

04

Build a rubric from the intended evidence

Write what a learner should demonstrate, then list the evidence needed to judge it. Divide the review into meaningful criteria such as reasoning, correctness and communication only where those distinctions matter to the task. Describe what satisfactory work shows in observable terms.

Try the criteria on sample submissions, including an incomplete answer and a result reached through questionable reasoning. Ask reviewers to explain differences in their judgments. Revise ambiguous wording before the assessment begins. Give learners the criteria and explain the submission conditions, permitted assistance and feedback process. After the review, use the same criteria to make the result understandable rather than introducing new expectations in the feedback.

05

A simple assessment-rubric outline

Use enough criteria to reflect the task without turning the rubric into a long list of minor formatting preferences.

  • Learning objective: the activity or reasoning the assessment is meant to demonstrate.
  • Criterion: one meaningful aspect of the work that a reviewer will judge.
  • Required evidence: the output, explanation or demonstration relevant to that criterion.
  • Satisfactory standard: observable characteristics of an acceptable response.
  • Incomplete evidence: what is missing or incorrect and how that affects the judgment.
  • Review arrangements: reviewer, permitted assistance, feedback route and any reconsideration process.
06

Keep criteria separate from unstated personal preferences

A reviewer may prefer a particular style or tool, but it should not become an assessment requirement unless it belongs to the objective and was communicated. Distinguish a valid alternative method from an incorrect solution.

Avoid assessing a broad skill from one narrow signal. A polished presentation may not establish sound reasoning, while a minor formatting error may not invalidate a correct method. Explain the significance of each criterion so learners understand the decision rather than only receiving a score.

07

Can criteria change after learners begin?

Where a genuine correction is necessary, explain the change, its reason and how affected work will be treated. Avoid retrospective expectations that learners could not have anticipated. Test criteria before release and keep a visible version to reduce confusion.

ILLUSTRATIVE PLANNING EXAMPLE

Example: assessing a data-analysis task

Tell learners whether the review concerns data cleaning, reasoning, presentation or all three. Describe the evidence required for each criterion and show how a reviewer distinguishes a complete response from an incomplete one. Use a sample submission to check that reviewers interpret the rubric consistently.

Share the rubric before the attempt and use the same criteria in feedback. If criteria change, make the change explicit rather than judging work against an unstated expectation.
