THE STARTING POINT
Consider devices, connection constraints and practical alternatives in course design.
Understand the access context.
Ask which devices learners use and where they complete activities. Consider shared devices and interruptions as well as screen size. Avoid assuming every learner has a quiet workspace and continuous access to a large display. These conditions should influence the structure of the learning tasks.
Review activity requirements.
Separate activities that need a particular tool or device from those that can work across formats. Explain required resources before the learner starts. Where an alternative route is possible, make its instructions clear and confirm that it still supports the intended learning objective.
Check the experience with learners.
Walk through instructions, submissions and feedback on representative devices. Review long text, attachments and error messages. Capture barriers that require a content change as well as interface problems, and assign responsibility for resolving them before the course is opened more widely.
