出発点
Map workplace skills to observable tasks and practice evidence. Identify prerequisites and use the task map to prioritize training needs.
Use task evidence to identify a capability gap
Choose a role and list representative outputs reviewed by its owner. Break a broad capability into the decisions and actions needed to produce those outputs. Ask what a competent person notices, checks and escalates, rather than listing software features in isolation.
Map the prerequisite knowledge and access for each task. Compare the expected performance with evidence from an appropriate practice activity or supervised work. Discuss whether a difficulty comes from skill, unclear responsibility, missing information or an unsuitable process. Use that distinction to choose the response. Training can address a capability gap, while access and workflow issues need a different owner and action.
A task-to-skill mapping worksheet
Keep the wording close to the work so the matrix can be reviewed by a manager and the person performing the role.
- Work task: trigger, expected output and the person who uses or reviews it.
- Component actions: decisions, calculations, communication and tool use required.
- Prerequisites: knowledge, permissions, references and resources available to the role.
- Evidence: a practice task or observation that makes the capability visible.
- Gap interpretation: skill need, access problem, unclear process or another constraint.
- Response: learning activity or operational action, with an owner and review point.
Do not treat a course catalogue as a skills map
A list of available courses describes content, not the work a role needs to perform. Start from the task, then select relevant learning. Different people may need different support even when they share a job title.
Avoid inferring an individual’s capability only from attendance or self-rating. Use suitable evidence and explain its limits. Do not turn a practice exercise into an undisclosed employment decision; keep the purpose and handling of learning evidence clear to participants.
How often should the skills map be reviewed?
Review it when important tasks, tools or responsibilities change, and at agreed learning-review points. Keep a lightweight version history so changes are understandable. The aim is to reflect current work, not to maintain a static document that no longer guides useful decisions.
ILLUSTRATIVE PLANNING EXAMPLE
Example: defining spreadsheet skills for a role
“Spreadsheet skills” is broad. List the work: reconcile two lists, explain a discrepancy and prepare a repeatable summary. Ask the role owner which mistakes matter and which tools are available. Use a fictional dataset to design a practice task reflecting those actions rather than testing unrelated features.
The output is a task-to-skill map with prerequisites, practice activities and a reviewer. Use it to select relevant learning content and identify gaps.
