LE POINT DE DÉPART
Plan a new employee learning path with prerequisites, practice, support and review checkpoints. Clarify when a new joiner is ready to work independently.
Sequence onboarding from access to supervised responsibility
List the responsibilities a new joiner will take on and identify the preparation for each. Start with the tools, information and contacts needed to participate safely. Explain the normal workflow and the exceptions that require help before assigning independent work.
Use a progression: observe a task, practise it with suitable materials, review the attempt and then perform an agreed responsibility with support. Name the reviewer and define what they look for. Check how a remote or hybrid colleague obtains help without depending on informal office conversations. Schedule a follow-up to review unresolved questions and update the path where new joiners repeatedly encounter the same obstacle.
An onboarding checkpoint plan
Make the plan visible to the new joiner, manager and supporting colleague. Avoid making the learner discover essential contacts by trial and error.
- Responsibility: the task the new joiner is preparing to take on.
- Preparation: access, introductory material and prerequisites required before the task.
- Demonstration: who shows the workflow and explains important exceptions.
- Practice: a representative task and the evidence to discuss with a reviewer.
- Readiness decision: criteria, reviewer and scope of work permitted after review.
- Continuing support: named contact, escalation route and a scheduled follow-up.
Do not overload the first day with every responsibility
Separate urgent access and orientation needs from information that becomes useful later. A large document collection is not a sequence of learning. Explain what to read now, what to practise next and what can be used as a reference.
Avoid assuming that a new joiner can ask the same questions through the same channels as an established colleague. Check the support route in practice. Missing permissions, unclear ownership and unavailable reviewers should be recorded as operational obstacles, not attributed automatically to the learner.
How should hybrid onboarding differ?
Keep the same readiness criteria, while making access, meetings, practice and help available across locations. State which activities require attendance and which can be completed remotely. Confirm arrangements with the manager rather than assuming a new joiner knows the team’s unwritten working habits.
ILLUSTRATIVE PLANNING EXAMPLE
Example: onboarding a project coordinator
Begin with the tools and permissions the coordinator needs, then introduce a practice project update. Ask the new joiner to identify an overdue task, contact the right owner and explain the status clearly. Assign a colleague to review the attempt and answer questions before the task becomes a live responsibility.
Record the checkpoints and the support available after onboarding. Attending an introductory session should not be the only signal of readiness for independent work.
