THE STARTING POINT
Sequence context, practice and support for people entering a role.
Separate orientation from role practice.
Identify the information every new joiner needs and the activities specific to the role. Avoid placing all material into one long first-day session. Sequence it so people receive context before a task and have a clear route to ask questions when they begin practical work.
Assign a support contact.
Name the role responsible for each checkpoint, such as a manager, trainer or designated colleague. Explain what the new joiner should prepare and what the reviewer will check. The path should not rely on informal introductions to find the person who can answer an essential question.
Review readiness for the next step.
Use a task or discussion to check understanding before increasing responsibility. Record outstanding support needs rather than treating completion of reading material as complete readiness. Adjust the sequence using feedback from joiners and the people helping them enter the role.
