LE POINT DE DÉPART
Design learning feedback that identifies a specific issue and guides the next attempt. Connect criteria, examples and opportunities to revise the work.
Make the feedback usable in the next attempt
Choose the part of the learner’s work that demonstrates the intended skill. Compare it with the shared criteria and describe the specific gap. Distinguish an incorrect result from a method that happens to work only for the example provided.
Give the learner a manageable next action, such as testing an assumption or revising an explanation. Decide whether a hint, a question or a worked demonstration is appropriate to the stage of learning. Allow time for a revision and review what changed. Keep a record of repeated difficulties so the teaching team can examine the lesson or task instructions, instead of assuming every recurring problem belongs to the individual learner.
A feedback note with a clear next action
Use a short structure that a learner can follow. Avoid trying to correct every detail in one comment when only a few issues block progress.
- Criterion: the aspect of the task being reviewed and what a satisfactory attempt shows.
- Observation: the specific part of the submitted work that needs attention.
- Reason: how the issue affects the result, explanation or decision.
- Next action: a question, test or revision the learner can carry out.
- Support: a relevant example, reference or route to ask for clarification.
- Follow-up: when the revision is reviewed and what evidence will show progress.
Keep feedback about the work and the task
Labels such as “weak” or “excellent” provide little direction without an explanation. Point to the evidence and show how it relates to the criterion. Avoid personal judgments that do not help the learner decide what to do next.
Do not make the only feedback available after the final deadline if the activity is intended to support practice. Where a final assessment cannot be resubmitted, explain how the learner can use the guidance in a later activity.
Can automated feedback replace a teacher’s review?
It can support suitable checks, but its role depends on the task and how it is evaluated. Keep a route for disputed or unclear feedback. Decisions requiring interpretation should have appropriate review rather than assuming that an automatically generated comment is correct.
ILLUSTRATIVE PLANNING EXAMPLE
Example: reviewing a coding exercise
Instead of writing only “incorrect,” point to the case the solution does not handle and ask the learner to explain the assumption behind it. Offer a small test case and allow another attempt. Keep feedback tied to the exercise criteria so learners can understand which part of their approach needs attention.
Review the revised work against the same criteria. The purpose is a usable next action rather than a longer comment or an unexplained score.
