THE STARTING POINT
A practical approach to scoping workforce training around roles, prerequisites and usable skills.
Map the audience to its responsibilities.
Describe the roles involved and the tasks each group needs to perform. Discuss current knowledge with the team rather than assuming a uniform starting point. Differences in prerequisites may call for separate learning paths or preparation before a shared session.
Choose exercises with recognizable context.
Use activities that participants can connect to their work without exposing sensitive business information. Agree the materials and tools needed for the exercises. Give participants enough context to understand the task and enough space to explain the decisions they make.
Agree how learning will be reviewed.
A practical task, discussion or assessment can support different learning goals. Choose the method around the capability being developed. Explain the criteria and how feedback will be shared, so an assessment is part of the learning process rather than an unexplained score.
Plan the next opportunity to apply it.
Discuss where the new skill can be used after training and what support will be available. Agree ownership of follow-up activities. This makes the transition from a session to everyday work an explicit part of the programme scope.

- Which roles are participating?
- What knowledge is needed first?
- Which exercises reflect the intended skill?
- Where can the skill be applied afterward?
