DER AUSGANGSPUNKT

Build role-based practice scenarios around workplace decisions, constraints and exceptions. Define expected evidence and a useful debrief for each scenario.

01

04

Design a decision, not just a story

Choose one important role decision and identify the information available when it occurs. Build a short scenario containing enough context to act, with a realistic ambiguity or constraint. Avoid adding decorative detail that makes the task longer without changing the decision.

Ask the learner to explain the next action, the reason for it and any information they need before proceeding. Prepare a reviewer guide showing acceptable approaches and consequential errors. Run the scenario with someone familiar with the role to check realism. During the debrief, compare reasoning with the criteria and discuss a variation. Revise the scenario if success depends on guessing what the author intended rather than applying the relevant skill.

05

A reusable workplace-scenario card

Use fictional people and records unless a different use has been explicitly approved. The scenario should not expose real customer or employee information.

  • Role and situation: who the learner represents and what has just happened.
  • Available evidence: messages, documents or system information the role can access.
  • Decision point: the action, clarification or escalation the learner must choose.
  • Constraints: time, authority, policy boundaries and unavailable information.
  • Expected evidence: proposed action, reasoning and communication to another person.
  • Debrief guide: acceptable alternatives, significant mistakes and a follow-up variation.
06

Do not hide the real test in an irrelevant detail

A scenario should require the intended judgment, not reward noticing an arbitrary clue. Check that the correct action follows from the information and role boundaries provided. If more information is needed, requesting it can be a valid response.

Avoid treating one preferred wording as the only acceptable answer when several actions meet the criteria. Discuss why a decision is appropriate and what would change it. Keep the debrief focused on transferable reasoning instead of simply revealing the author’s answer.

07

Can a scenario have more than one acceptable response?

Yes. Define the conditions that make an approach acceptable and ask the learner to justify it. Where a policy sets a fixed requirement, state that requirement. Where judgment is involved, the reviewer guide should explain alternatives and the evidence needed to support them.

ILLUSTRATIVE PLANNING EXAMPLE

Example: handling an incomplete customer request

Give learners a request with a missing requirement and a realistic deadline. Ask them to decide what to clarify, whom to involve and what to communicate next. Provide the information available to the actual role. Avoid supplying the answer in the scenario instructions or rewarding a guess that bypasses clarification.

Use the debrief to compare reasoning with the agreed criteria. Capture the decision and explanation, not only whether the learner reached the preferred final answer.
