DER AUSGANGSPUNKT
Plan a workplace training schedule around role demands, prerequisites and practice time. Agree manager support and a route for missed activities.
Schedule practice and review as real work
Start with the tasks learners need to practise and the time those activities reasonably require. Discuss shift patterns, busy periods, manager expectations and access to tools. Identify which parts need a live facilitator and which can be completed independently.
Reserve time for practice, feedback and a further attempt, not just the presentation. Confirm that reviewers are available when work is submitted. Provide a clear route for someone who misses a session or joins later. For hybrid teams, state which activities require a particular location. Review the first cycle with learners and managers, then adjust arrangements where scheduling rather than content prevents participation.
A training schedule with operating responsibilities
Use the schedule to agree commitments before publishing invitations. Keep any timings realistic for the activity rather than copying a standard session length.
- Audience and task: who needs the learning and what they must practise.
- Availability: shifts, planned workload, device access and location constraints.
- Learning sequence: preparation, facilitated work, independent practice and feedback.
- Time commitment: duration and protected time agreed with the responsible manager.
- Review support: facilitator, reviewer, submission point and expected feedback window.
- Missed-activity route: materials, alternative practice and how a learner rejoins the sequence.
Do not schedule training against an unchanged workload by default
If staff are expected to complete learning while handling their usual demand, discuss how priorities will be managed. Otherwise a nominally available course may be difficult to use. Record the agreement rather than assuming learners can find time.
Avoid splitting an activity into short sessions that leave no useful stopping point. Some practice needs uninterrupted time or a reviewer present. Match the schedule to the task and explain what to save or prepare before continuing after an interruption.
Should all training be self-paced?
Choose the format around the activity. Independent material may suit preparation, while discussion, demonstration or feedback may need interaction. A mixed sequence can work if deadlines, support and practice opportunities are clear. Confirm the arrangements for people on different shifts or in different locations.
ILLUSTRATIVE PLANNING EXAMPLE
Example: a team with rotating shifts
Check when each shift can access a lesson and when a reviewer is available. Divide the learning into activities that can be completed within the agreed time, with a clear continuation point. Decide how someone who misses a session obtains the material and receives feedback on the same practice task.
Confirm time allocation with the manager before scheduling. Include practice and follow-up in the plan rather than treating attendance as the whole commitment.
