DER AUSGANGSPUNKT

Create a training follow-up plan with workplace practice, manager support and review. Check how learners apply a skill after the session ends.

01

04

Agree the next work attempt before the session ends

Choose a suitable task where learners can apply the skill and explain what evidence will be reviewed. Confirm that the task is within their responsibility and that required access is available. Set a follow-up point with the manager or supporting colleague while the learning is still connected to an immediate action.

At follow-up, inspect the work and ask what made application easier or harder. Separate misunderstandings from process or access obstacles. Agree a specific response: another practice attempt, clarification of a rule, a resource update or help from an operating owner. Record the next action and review it where appropriate, rather than collecting feedback without deciding what to do with it.

05

A follow-up conversation record

Keep the record proportionate to the learning purpose. Explain to participants how learning evidence is used and who can view it.

  • Skill and task: what the learner will apply and in which work situation.
  • Evidence: output, observation or explanation suitable for discussing the attempt.
  • Support: manager, colleague or mentor available when questions arise.
  • Review point: agreed timing, reviewer and the questions to discuss.
  • Obstacle: knowledge gap, unclear instruction, missing access or another operating issue.
  • Next action: further practice, resource change or process correction, with an owner.
06

A satisfaction survey is not evidence of workplace application

A learner can value a session without yet being able to perform the task. Ask for appropriate evidence of an attempt and discuss its limits. Keep the conversation supportive and specific rather than treating every difficulty as a negative judgment.

Avoid claiming that a business change resulted from training without considering other changes in the environment. Describe what was observed, the period reviewed and what remains uncertain. The immediate purpose of follow-up is to decide useful support, not to invent an impressive outcome.

07

When should follow-up happen?

Choose a point when the learner has had a realistic opportunity to use the skill. A rarely occurring task may need a practice scenario first. Agree timing with the role owner and revise it when workload or access prevents a meaningful attempt.

ILLUSTRATIVE PLANNING EXAMPLE

Example: applying a new reporting method

After training, ask learners to prepare a report using an approved practice dataset or an appropriate work task. Arrange a review with a colleague who understands the method. Invite learners to record obstacles, including missing access or unclear instructions, so the team can separate a skills gap from a workflow problem.

Agree a follow-up date, the evidence to review and who helps with unresolved issues. Use the findings to decide the next support action.
